What is SEO for AI (AISO / GEO)? 2026 guide

More and more customers skip Google and ask ChatGPT: “who would you recommend?”. SEO for AI makes your business appear in that answer. Here’s what it is, how it works and where to start.

Definition: what is SEO for AI?

SEO for AI – also called AISO (AI Search Optimization) or GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) – is the optimization of content and brand presence online so that language models such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude understand it, consider it trustworthy and recommend the business in their answers.

In traditional SEO you compete for a position in a list of results, and the customer chooses a link. In SEO for AI you compete for a place in one ready-made answer that the AI assistant gives the user. If your business isn’t in it, the customer may never learn that you exist.

Why does SEO for AI matter right now?

The way people look for information is changing fast. According to the KPMG report “Artificial Intelligence in Poland”, 69% of Poles say they use AI regularly, and according to an Adyen study reported by Rzeczpospolita, 37% of Poles use AI when shopping. More and more buying decisions start with a question to a chatbot rather than a search engine.

At the same time, most businesses don’t optimize their presence for AI yet. That means it is easier to earn a place in AI answers today than it will be in a year or two, once competitors start.

How do AI models choose which businesses to recommend?

AI assistants build answers from two main sources:

  1. Training knowledge – information the model “read” while being trained on large collections of web text. If many trustworthy sites wrote about your business, the model may simply know it.
  2. Live web search – ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude can search the web during a conversation and cite specific pages. Then what matters is whether your content is easy to find, understand and quote.

In both cases the model favours information that:

  • answers the question precisely – e.g. “best business law firm in Warsaw”, not just “law firm”,
  • comes from trustworthy sources – industry rankings, media, directories, customer reviews and a well-described company website,
  • is consistent – the same company details (name, specialization, location) in many places online,
  • is specific and easy to quote – clear definitions, lists, comparisons, numbers and answers to questions.

SEO vs SEO for AI – key differences

Traditional SEOSEO for AI (AISO / GEO)
GoalHigh position in Google resultsPresence and recommendation in the AI answer
What the customer seesA list of links to choose fromOne ready answer with a few recommendations
Key signalsContent, links, technical SEOContent, citations in external sources, consistent brand description
Content formatPages targeting keywordsClear definitions, Q&A, comparisons, data

Most importantly: SEO for AI does not replace traditional SEO. A fast, well-indexed website helps in both channels – which is why it pays to run them side by side.

What does AI search optimization include?

1. Brand presence analysis

We check what ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude say about the business today, which sources they cite and whom they recommend instead.

2. Chatbot query research

We identify the questions customers ask – from broad (“which law firm in Warsaw?”) to very specific (“who can help with a dispute with a supplier?”).

3. Content creation and optimization

We create content that AI can easily understand and quote: definitions, answers to questions, comparisons and service descriptions with specifics.

4. Authority building

We earn mentions and citations in sources AI trusts – rankings, industry media, directories and customer reviews.

5. Monitoring and optimization

We regularly check AI answers and reinforce what works. Read more in How to get ChatGPT to recommend your business – 7 steps.

How do you measure SEO for AI results?

The basis is a regular test: you ask AI models the questions your customers ask and check whether your business appears, in which position and with what description. It’s also worth watching analytics for traffic from domains such as chatgpt.com or perplexity.ai. We describe it step by step in How to check if AI recommends your business.

Common mistakes

  • Inconsistent company details – a different name, address or specialization in different places makes it harder for AI to understand who you are.
  • Vague content – “we are an industry leader” tells a model nothing. Specifics (specialization, city, type of clients) do.
  • Blocking AI crawlers – an overly restrictive robots.txt can prevent AI search engines from reading your site.
  • No external sources – your own website isn’t enough. AI looks for confirmation in other, independent places.

Frequently asked questions

Is SEO for AI the same as GEO?

Yes, they are different names for the same approach. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) and AISO (AI Search Optimization) both mean optimizing a brand for answers generated by AI models.

Does SEO for AI work outside English?

Yes. AI models answer in many languages and use local sources, so visibility can be built locally – in Polish, English and other languages.

Do I have to give up traditional SEO?

No. The two strategies complement each other – a well-optimized website helps both in Google and in AI answers.
